Early Life and Faith Journey
Allan Descheneau, known online as XtianNinja, was born and raised in a small trade town in the foothills of Alberta. Growing up in a Christian home, Allan committed his life to Jesus at a young age. His parents were saved when he was very young and ensured that church was a central part of his life. However, his early years were marked by frequent school changes and bullying, which made it difficult for him to make friends. Despite these struggles, his home and church provided him with the love and support he needed.
During his teenage years, Allan experienced a period of rebellion, distancing himself from his faith. However, God’s hand was always upon him. After high school, feeling lost and unsure about his future, he enrolled at North American Bible College (now Taylor College & Seminary) in Edmonton to “figure things out.” It was there that he rededicated his life to Jesus, met his future wife, Anita, and received his calling into full-time pastoral ministry.
Calling to Ministry
Allan’s time at Bible college was a period of significant spiritual breakthrough. Surrounded by supportive peers and mentors, he experienced God’s love and acceptance in profound ways. This deepened his faith and gave him a clear sense of purpose. He dedicated himself to pastoral ministry, serving in various roles within the church, including tech and sound management, graphic design, photography, video editing, preaching, teaching, and leadership development. Allan’s passion has always been to share Jesus and teach God’s truth in creative and inspiring ways.
One pivotal moment in his journey was when he decided to let God take control of his future. Allan recalls, “I said to God, ‘Lord, I don’t have any idea what I’m doing. I have all these plans, I have all these ideas, I’ve bounced all over your church, I’ve tried everything and anything, and I still have no clue, no impression, no feeling, no word as to what you want from me.’ So I said, ‘Alright God, I got a plan. I’m going to say yes to literally anything anyone asks me to do from now on.’”
This moment of surrender was not just a fleeting decision but a profound shift in Allan’s approach to life and ministry. By committing to saying yes to every opportunity that came his way, Allan opened himself up to a myriad of experiences that would shape his future. This decision led him to his first preaching assignment, despite his initial lack of confidence and experience in public speaking.
Allan shares, “The next day, the academic vice president of the school called me and asked me to preach. Normally, I would have laughed him out of the room, but because I had committed to saying yes to God, I accepted. I was so nervous I was sick! I had only one sermon which I delivered at warp speed, thinking it was terrible. But instead of being a disaster, it opened doors for more preaching opportunities” .
Reflecting on this transformative period, Allan notes, “After that first sermon, more churches started inviting me to preach. Eventually, I was asked to be a full-time preacher at a small church. I kept saying yes because that’s where God was pointing me. This journey of saying yes led me to realize that all the varied experiences I had were preparing me for a more significant calling” .
Ministry Challenges and Growth
Allan’s journey as a pastor has not been without its challenges. He encountered significant church abuse and opposition throughout his ministry. In one congregation, he faced deeply entrenched resistance from members set in their ways. Despite his efforts to bring renewal and growth, the church eventually closed its doors. This painful experience taught Allan the importance of relying on God’s guidance and timing, rather than his own plans. Allan recalls, “It was like hitting a brick wall every day. Every new idea was met with suspicion and resistance. It felt like no matter how hard I tried, nothing would change.”
During this time, Allan experienced a lot of hurt at the hands of church people. He reflects, “One defining characteristic of my years of pastoral ministry has been going through a lot of hurt at the hands of church people and suffering even more from the well-meaning ones who wanted to help but didn’t really do it with biblical wisdom.” He dealt with deeply bitter individuals and “wolves in sheep’s clothing” who spread gossip, lies, and fear among the congregation. “Some of the people swallowed that drama like choice morsels, and that fear and bitterness started to spread like cancer. I tried to fight it, preach against it, and meet about it, but so much of it was in secret meetings, emails, and phone calls.” This internal strife crippled the ministry, making it difficult to move forward.
Despite the difficulties, Allan kept going, showing up, praying, preaching, and trying to live a godly life as an elder in the church. “When all hell broke loose at the church—and it did multiple times—I want to be sure I could stand before God and say I tried, Lord, I tried.”
In another congregation, Allan faced further difficulties, including toxic leadership, manipulation, and betrayal from those he trusted. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it acted as a refining fire, exposing strengths and weaknesses within the church. Allan notes, “If you struggled with fear and anxiety before, it took you over. But if you came into the pandemic with strong faith, it protected you. I think a lot of Christians and churches failed the test. Those three things—a bitter gossip, an arrogant wolf, and a refining fire pandemic—all sort of contributed to me being where I’m at today.”
These experiences took a profound emotional and spiritual toll, leading to periods of deep discouragement and questioning. However, through these trials, he learned invaluable lessons about resilience, forgiveness, and the unconditional love of God. Allan explains, “I’ve been through my fair share of abuse, but it never made me quit. All the school bullying, I kept going to school every day and graduated. All the church abuse, I still preached and served and went to every meeting. All the difficult stuff that’s happened in my personal life, I kept working on my marriage, I kept taking care of my kids, I kept following Jesus.”
Through this period of trial, he learned invaluable lessons about resilience, forgiveness, and the power of God’s unconditional love. “In the darkest moments, I clung to God’s promises,” Allan reflects. “It was a process of stripping away my own pride and learning to forgive those who had wronged me. I realized that true strength comes from surrendering to God’s will and trusting Him to fight my battles.”
These experiences of church abuse and opposition profoundly shaped Allan’s approach to ministry equipping him with a unique perspective and a message of hope and resilience. His experiences have made him a more empathetic and understanding leader, deeply committed to supporting others through their own struggles. He developed a deeper empathy for those who have been hurt by the church and a stronger resolve to create a supportive and nurturing community. This compassion became a cornerstone of his online ministry, where he seeks to provide a safe space for individuals to explore their faith and find healing.
Allan’s journey through these challenges also underscored the importance of mental health and self-care in ministry and has become a key part of his digital ministry. He openly shares his struggles with depression and the toll that bullying, abuse, and church hurt can take on one’s mental and emotional well-being. “There were times when I felt completely overwhelmed, questioning my worth and purpose,” Allan admits. “But through counseling, support from my family, and leaning on God’s strength, I learned the importance of self-care and seeking help.”
Today, Allan continues to draw on these lessons in his work as a digital pastor and content creator. His ministry is marked by a spirit of inclusivity and understanding, and reaches out to the lost, lonely, and disenfranchised, providing them with the love, support, and guidance they need.
Transition to Online Ministry
In September 2020, Allan felt a profound and unmistakable call from God to transition from traditional pastoral roles to a new, uncharted path: full-time online ministry. This decision marked a significant turning point in his life, driven by his desire to reach the lost, lonely, and disenfranchised in an increasingly digital age.
Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Allan shares, “God made it absolutely clear that He wanted me to give up looking for a new traditional ministry position or secular work and dedicate myself to serving as a full-time Twitch streamer.” This leap of faith was not without its uncertainties and challenges. Initially, Allan was unsure of what lay ahead and what this new form of ministry would look like. However, his trust in God’s leading and his passion for connecting with people through innovative means propelled him forward.
Allan began by building an online community on Twitch, a platform primarily known for gaming but increasingly recognized for its potential to foster meaningful connections and discussions. His streams quickly gained traction, drawing viewers from diverse backgrounds who were seeking not only entertainment but also spiritual guidance and community. Allan’s unique approach combined engaging gameplay with deep, thought-provoking conversations about faith, personal growth, and the challenges of modern life.
One of the driving forces behind Allan’s transition to online ministry was his recognition of the potential to reach individuals who might never set foot in a traditional church. He saw the digital space as a mission field ripe for harvest, filled with people yearning for connection and understanding. “I realized that there are so many people out there who feel isolated and disconnected,” Allan explains. “The online world offers a unique opportunity to reach them where they are, to meet them in their struggles, and to share God’s love in a way that is accessible and relatable.”
During this time, Allan experienced what he describes as a “Balaam’s donkey moment.” Initially, he thought he should be part-time at a non-profit parrot rescue charity to support his ministry financially. He advanced to the third interview stage, where the person running the charity, who was non-Christian, said, “You are the perfect person for this job. We’ve been looking for someone like you for a while. But I can’t hire you in good conscience because it’s clear you’re completely sold out to your online ministry idea.” This unexpected affirmation from someone outside his faith made it clear that his efforts needed to be fully dedicated to this new form of ministry. Allan reflects, “I realized that trying to juggle part-time work with my calling would not allow me to give my best to either. God’s direction was for me to focus entirely on this new path.”
In 2021, Allan launched TACO: The Alliance for Creative Outreach, a network dedicated to supporting and equipping Christian content creators around the world. TACO’s mission is to foster a community of creators who are passionate about sharing God’s love through innovative and engaging content. Allan’s vision for TACO is to create a platform where creators can feel validated in their call to share God’s love with their special community, collaborate, share resources, and find encouragement in their unique callings.
Through TACO, Allan has been able to mentor and support countless creators, helping them navigate the complexities of digital ministry and build impactful online presences. He hosts regular training sessions, workshops, and collaborative events, providing practical tools and spiritual guidance to help creators thrive in their ministries. He recently authored “The Art of Digital Influence,” aimed at helping other Christian content creators navigate the digital landscape effectively. Allan’s heart for mentorship and community is evident in every aspect of TACO’s work, as he continually seeks to uplift and empower others.
In February 2024, Allan’s dedication and innovative approach to ministry were recognized when he was appointed as the first digital missionary for Bayview Glen and the Alliance denomination. This role allows him to bridge the gap between traditional churches and the digital mission field, helping pastors and congregations understand and embrace the opportunities for outreach and connection in the online world. Allan’s work as a digital missionary involves creating resources, offering consultations, speaking at events, and offering is working to offer training to help churches develop their own digital ministries.
The transition to online ministry has not only expanded his reach but also deepened his impact. His streams, podcasts, and videos have touched the lives of many, providing hope, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. Allan reflects, “It’s amazing to see how God is using this platform to change lives. People who felt alone and hopeless are finding community and purpose. It’s a testament to the power of God’s love and the limitless possibilities of digital ministry.”
Allan’s journey is a testament to the power of adaptability, creativity, and unwavering faith; a reminder that God’s call can lead us to unexpected places and, with faith and perseverance, we can make a profound impact on those around us. His commitment to being a true friend and mentor during his livestreams has touched many lives.
